UNIFORM PROVIDERS

Uniforms provide a unity among the students as being identified as a Brighton Collegiate High School student.  The dress code you see below grants leeway with the principal and the interpretation of these specific rules and regulations.  Make no mistake, dress code is an important part of our philosophy, and it will remain so.  However, allowing our principal to interpret how it will be enforced will be within their area of expertise.

Below is a detailed description of the school uniform.  Modifying the uniform in any way will not be allowed.  Students are to maintain the manufacture lines of each garment.

Pants: must fit the waistline and not sag in the crotch.  The cuff of the pants must be hemmed and may not touch the ground.  [Pants may not be so large that the shoelaces cannot be seen.]  Pants may not be excessively tight – may not show any descriptive lines of the body.  Sweatpants, and nylon warm-ups, are not allowed.  No logos on any pants.  No holes or tears.  Pants must be a solid color of khaki (tan or green), navy blue or denim.

Shorts: must fit at the waistline and not sag in the crotch.  No holes or tears.  The cuff of the shorts must be hemmed and must be of a modest length.  Spandex or tightly fitting shorts are not allowed.  No logos on any shorts.  Shorts must be a solid color of khaki (tan or green), navy blue or denim.

Skirts and Skorts: must fit the waistline and may not be excessively tight – may not show any descriptive lines of the body.  Skirts and skorts must be of modest length and may not touch the ground.  No logos on any skirts or skorts.  Skirts and skorts must be a solid color of khaki (tan), navy blue, or denim.

Sweatshirts and Sweaters: must be an approved garment and may not be excessively tight or baggy.  If the approved sweatshirts is hooded it may be worn in the classroom; but the hoods must remain off the head.

Shoes: must be worn at all times.  No beach shoes, or flip-flops.  Open-toed shoes can be a hazard.  Based on this fact, these shoes are not to be worn to school.  Exceptions for medical reason may be allowed.  To receive an exemption regarding footwear, the student must present a signed letter from a medical doctor.

9.1.1    Standard Appearance Guidelines for Accessories and/or Approved Dress Worn During         School-Sponsored School Events

Accessories:  worn in addition to dress code approved clothing will not be allowed to cause or likely to cause disruption of the educational process.

The wearing of clothing, jewelry or a style of grooming that is identified with membership in a gang will not be tolerated in school or at any school sponsored activity.  Apparel that interferes with or endangers self or others while participating in school or school sponsored activities is not allowed.

Hats and sunglasses may only be worn or seen before or after school hours.  No hats or sunglasses are to be worn in the building.  Hats include visors and bandannas.

Outer wear and boots that are worn for warmth to and from school and outside cannot be worn in the classroom.  An exception to the rule would be if the heating system is down and coats need to be worn until the problem is repaired.

Belts are required, belt ends are to be no longer than 6” and tucked in.  Belts must be leather or fabric with plain buckles.

No undergarments may show at any time, nor should they be worn as outer garments.  Undershirts are only acceptable if worn under the appropriate dress code shirt and complies with the board approved school colors (i.e. navy blue, khaki tan, white or hunter green).

Modest jewelry is allowed.  An object that has a purpose other than jewelry cannot be worn as jewelry (i.e. bicycle chains or collars).  Earrings may not pose a safety hazard.

School sponsored activities and special events may have specific guidelines concerning appropriate dress.

Apparel advertising tobacco, alcohol, illegal substances, and/or offensive slogans are not acceptable attire at school-sponsored activities.  Clothes making statements with sexual innuendoes are not allowed.

All articles of clothing should appear neat, clean and in good condition and repair.

Those families who qualify for free or reduced lunch can apply for clothing uniform assistance.  Please contact the front office for details.

Final decisions with respect to the dress code are made at the discretion of the principal, or his/her designee, including items not specifically referred to in the above policy.  The principal or his/her designee must approve any exception to this code due to a medical or religious reason.

Compliance with the dress code is mandatory.  Dress code violations will be dealt with in accordance with the Brighton Collegiate High School disciplinary policy.
